Product Overview

This is the digital toolbox version of Choosing Strengths.

What are our strengths and where do they come from?

We may think of strengths as qualities we inherit (such as patience, resilience or kindness), resources we gather (such as a house, a computer or a car) or skills we learn as we journey through life (such as a profession or other skills and talents such as fixing an engine, growing a garden or casting a fishing line). But we can also think of our strengths as choices we make.

Choosing Strengths is a set of 36 cards developed in the rich traditions of choice theory and strengths-based practice. Each beautifully illustrated card identifies a potential strength that anyone can choose to cultivate and make their own.

A powerful tool for social work, counselling, family and youth work, and building organisational culture, Choosing Strengths reminds us that our strengths are in our own hands.

What's Included?
  • access to a digital set of the 36 cards
  • a digital version of the booklet, full of extra information and ideas for using the cards

Using Choosing Strengths in government departments

‘I recently used Choosing Strengths cards with staff who assess and approve government aid—often seen as rigid in applying guidelines. In pairs, each person received a random card and shared how they could apply that strength in their work. The activity boosted energy and helped participants see themselves—and their approach to clients—in a more positive, flexible way.’

Strengths in special schools

‘I’m a Christian Pastoral Support Worker at an R–12+ school for about 70 students with intellectual disabilities, including autism, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy. Many face emotional challenges, especially as teens, when they realize their lives may differ from peers and independence may be limited. Depression and anxiety are common.
I use Choosing Strengths cards in small groups to help students see they have choices, are not defined by their disability, and can make decisions that positively impact their quality of life.’
