Product Overview

Narratives, metaphors and ‘restorying’ are all important elements of strength-based conversations. They help us think differently about the challenges we’re facing and offer alternative ways of thinking about solutions and ways to move forward.

Storycatching is a collection of 80 prompts for remembering and sharing stories, each with a quirky and poignant image, inspired by the objects and ephemera of our everyday lives.

Its uses are as broad as your imagination. Counsellors and psychologists love its ability to create safe conversations—teachers use it as a fast-track to unlock students’ creativity—HR managers have told us they use Storycatching to transform job interviews—while journallers and creative writers find endless inspiration in the cards. It can even be used by families and friends to enliven gatherings or honour special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries.

Use Storycatching to explore feelings and strengths—transform conferences and workshops—invite deep listening—build connection—remember and share family stories.

How to Use
  • Workshop/conference opener: Ask each participant to choose a card that prompts a story about why they are at the workshop, OR how they ended up doing the kind of work they do.
  • I remember: Whether in a group or working one-to-one, ask each person to choose a card and begin telling a story with the words ‘I remember…’
  • Deep listening: Working in pairs, invite each participant to choose a card. Each person has 2 or 3 minutes to share their story while their partner simply listens without interruption or comment.
  • Celebrations: At birthdays, anniversaries etc., ask each person to choose a card that reminds them of a story about the person/people being celebrated.

‘I’m a CRT teacher, so I really have to think on my feet. I recently used the Storycatching cards with a group of Year 9 boys who had a reputation for behavioural problems and being hard to engage. They loved the cards! Everyone shared a story and I even got some of the boys writing. I take these cards everywhere I teach.’

Travis Secondary Teacher

‘Here is a pack of cards for you—each one a tantalising path into a place worth exploring. Shuffle through them slowly, or spread them out around you. So many doors asking to be knocked on!

Light a bonfire in your listener’s imagination, listen in return, and be reminded of something else worth telling and retelling. You’ll find laughter you’ve forgotten and tears you haven’t shed.

Pick out another card and see where it takes you.’

‘I teach secondary school English in a challenging Western Sydney suburb, where engaging students—especially in writing—can be tough.
Last term, I introduced Storycatching cards to my VCE class, and the results amazed me. Stories flowed naturally, and students wrote honest, free prose inspired by their chosen cards.
One quiet student produced a deeply moving piece from the ‘Where am I?’ card. The double session flew by, and I’m already planning to use the cards again in Term 3.
Thank you for creating such an accessible, inspiring resource.’
