How to Use
- Random choice: Pick three cards at random. On a scale of 1 to 5, how am I doing in relation to each of the cards? What am I already doing that helps? What have I done in the past that could help now? What new strategy could I try?
- At work: Choose cards to speak about ways your organisation supports self-care. Which cards show aspects of self-care your organisation does well? What could your organisation do better? Who in the organisation can help? What processes are in place?
- During change: Thinking about the change you’re going through, which aspects of your self-care are under pressure or have dropped away completely? Which cards represent strengths or behaviours that you’ve found helpful in other difficult times?
- In supervision: Use the cards to help create a self-care plan. They can also be a valuable part of an annual review.

self care in residential care
“I use the Self-Care cards with my residential carers for reflective practice, and they’ve sparked some incredibly meaningful and insightful conversations. I especially appreciate the prompting questions on the back—they offer a fresh perspective and help deepen the initial thoughts the cards provoke. The polarity cards are also a fantastic tool for exploring opposing forces in self-care. Being able to layer them with other cards adds a powerful dimension to the discussion and helps guide it in a more focused direction.”
