Product Overview

It doesn’t matter if we are four or one hundred and four—every day we rely on a vast repertoire of skills. Can-Do Dinosaurs is a delightful set of cards for supporting children to build their strengths and skills, connect with others, stay safe, choose helpful behaviours, grow resilience, and take responsibility, all of which are vital for emotional development.

Children, with their innate curiosity and aptitude for learning, are naturally poised to absorb the wisdom, habits, attitudes and values of the adults around them. Each of the 28 colourful cards features a specific skill and a corresponding dinosaur illustration designed to help children explore their choices and strengths.

An essential resource for early childhood workers, preschool teachers, primary teachers, social workers, and child and family service workers. Parents can also introduce these quirky dinosaur characters to encourage positive habits and healthy self-esteem.

Minimal text ensures the cards are accessible for both literate and pre-literate youngsters.

How to Use
  • Giving praise: Use the cards to promote positive behaviours by noticing what your students or children do well, then acknowledge them with the appropriate card.
  • Keeping safe: Invite children to scan the cards and pick skills that could be used to stay safe (e.g. ‘I can tell others’ and ‘I can be angry’). Which of these skills need practice?
  • Building new skills: Which card shows a skill you would like to learn? Who could help you learn that new skill?
  • Practicing and embedding: Invite children to pick a card and demonstrate the action shown on the card.

Can-Do Dinosaurs and the family

‘I worked with a family whose two children (9 and 11) had recently moved in with their dad, step-mum, and two younger siblings after six years apart. I used Can-Do Dinosaurs to spark positive discussion and help each person recognize what they bring to the family.

Around the table, everyone chose cards for themselves and others, explaining their choices. I photographed the selections so each member had a reminder of what others appreciated about them. This activity helped the family see that everyone contributes and that even small actions are valued.’

‘In 2013, aid worker Nicole Rotaru took Can-Do Dinosaurs cards to the Nuba Mountains in Sudan, a region scarred by decades of conflict. Despite transport challenges, the cards reached a local field hospital where children and adults delighted in their bright colors and playful captions. Even those who didn’t speak English joined in, repeating ‘I can…’ with enthusiasm. Nicole described the laughter as a powerful tonic for a community marked by resilience amid years of war and hardship.’
