Product Overview

For anyone who works in the people professions—social workers, counsellors, health professionals, psychologists, educators, managers, as well as parents and carers—self-care is critical. Working with others who are facing significant difficulties can take a toll. Unless we actively support self-care, then sick days and staff turnover can escalate.

Regular reflective conversations about self-care can help people enhance their health and wellbeing, manage stress, reduce burnout and compassion fatigue, and increase their happiness and job satisfaction.

With 50 beautifully-illustrated, bird-themed cards and 100 thought-provoking questions, this resource is designed to put self-care on the agenda in supervision, teams, planning, policies and procedures at work, and in our personal lives at home.

Each card names a key theme, such as habits, relationships, health, identity, balance, safety and support, and includes two questions to stimulate conversation around the topic.

The language and style of each card is simple and easy to understand, making Self-Care – Cards for home & work accessible for anyone who could use a little more care in their life, both in the workplace and at home.

Perfect for counsellors, psychologists, wellbeing staff, managers of teams, and for personal use.

How to Use
  • Random choice: Pick three cards at random. On a scale of 1 to 5, how am I doing in relation to each of the cards? What am I already doing that helps? What have I done in the past that could help now? What new strategy could I try?
  • At work: Choose cards to speak about ways your organisation supports self-care. Which cards show aspects of self-care your organisation does well? What could your organisation do better? Who in the organisation can help? What processes are in place?
  • During change: Thinking about the change you’re going through, which aspects of your self-care are under pressure or have dropped away completely? Which cards represent strengths or behaviours that you’ve found helpful in other difficult times?
  • In supervision: Use the cards to help create a self-care plan. They can also be a valuable part of an annual review.

self care in residential care

“I use the Self-Care cards with my residential carers for reflective practice, and they’ve sparked some incredibly meaningful and insightful conversations. I especially appreciate the prompting questions on the back—they offer a fresh perspective and help deepen the initial thoughts the cards provoke. The polarity cards are also a fantastic tool for exploring opposing forces in self-care. Being able to layer them with other cards adds a powerful dimension to the discussion and helps guide it in a more focused direction.”
