We’re often told ‘one step at a time’ when it comes to reaching our goals. But when we are navigating mental health issues, sometimes every step feels hard.

Next Steps is a unique resource that focusses on the very small, daily actions we can take to start moving forward. This might include taking a shower, going for a short walk, or having a cup of coffee.

The 52 full-colour photographs of everyday activities and objects that make up Next Steps are designed to inspire people to take achievable steps and bring about positive change.

Based on strengths-based, solution-focused mental health practices, people can use the cards to identify and work towards simple goals, both today or in the future.

Next Steps is a practical, visual tool for counsellors, social workers, wellbeing staff support people with mental health issues. Suitable for young adults and adults

How to Use
  • Getting started: Can be as simple as spreading the cards out and asking the question, ‘is there a next step you could take today?’ What strengths will help your next step happen? How would you be feeling if you took this step today?
  • Divide into themes: You may use the whole deck of cards or divide into themes, such as independent living; in the community; at home; staying well or the status quo.
  • The miracle question: Imagine you woke up tomorrow and your best hopes were realised. Can you choose a card that represents the next steps you would be taking?
  • Recognising exceptions: What steps have you taken before? How did you do it? What can we learn from that time?

Testimonials

I have a big heart for Innovative Resources and their tools because they’ve really journeyed with me as I’ve grown as a therapist

Pip Westwood, Play Therapist Masters in Child Play Therapy | Undergraduate in Psychology | Private Practice

The most common question we’re asked is how do we talk with children about grief? Innovative Resources cards are a great place to start.

Shelly Skinner, CEO of Lionheart Lionheart’s programs are designed to educate children, teens, and adults about grief and loss.

We regularly used Innovative Resources card sets for team building, debriefing and talking about hopes and pictures of the future. I love the non-prescriptive nature of the cards. They are particularly useful in learning and talking about feelings with people of all ages who are not used to putting language to their feelings.
